DIY & Outfits for the 4th!

Today/this weekend in Blacksburg is supposed to be hot. I know I can't really complain when we don't have terrible wildfires to worry about, but still, the heat will affect what I do with my day.

I am planning to gather the supplies to make one or all of the following in preparation for next week which contains my 2nd favorite holiday! I think I'll sport red, white and blue all week...both in my clothing and my posts.
Sorry 'bout it.

in memory of AKW

Four years ago today I lost a close friend of mine.
It was the summer before our senior year in high school.
Kind of funny how this is another "summer before senior year", although the college version.

I'll never forget that day, but most importantly I will never forget that girl.

it's loveliness increases;
it will never pass into nothingness."

Can't wait to say helloooo to the weekend.

weekend recap!

Can you believe it's the last week of June already!?
Summer seriously needs to slow down. Although I am excited to be a senior and move on in life, I absolutely love the summer time more than any other time!
I just love that everyone is in a happy mood, the cool breeze is warmly welcomed and WATERMELON is to be found everywhere. Fact: I love watermelon. Almost too much. We bought one on Saturday and I've already eaten 1/2 of it.
This could be bad.

I also love the fun events that summer brings! I attended the first big one in Blacksburg - Summer Solstice Festival - this past weekend and it was wonderful. We headed down around 1:00 with Sadie to watch a steel drum band and stayed for about 2 hours. It was very hot so we didn't want to keep Sadie out there for too long.
She is a very energetic, sweet pup who really just wants to run around and make friends and play! It's too bad that we couldn't just let her run free. Although she whined to sniff everyone and everything, I think she had fun just being out of the house on the gorgeous day!

As we were leaving to take Sadie home, we walked through the craft vendors. There were some adorable handmade coasters, jewelry and felt play food for children.  There were some unique lawn fountains, map coasters and greeting cards.  Then, there was a tent with vintage clothing, all mixed up.  It looked almost like a thrift store had set up a mini shop - they even had some bags and such.
I wasn't planning to purchase anything, but then something colorful caught my eye.
A vintage Lilly Pulitzer piece. A dress - best described as a polo shirt dress - for $10.
WHAT! Not my ideal style, but I love that it's so old.
I had no hopes of finding something I would like at that booth, let alone finding something Lilly. I was blown away. I have no idea how or when it got there but I'm glad I was the first to spot it!
It's definitely been worn, but nothing seems to be wrong with it. However it's a little too long for my liking so I'm going to have it altered to just above my knee.
* Can anyone help me to name the print? I tried to search online but nothing came up.

After grabbing something cold to drink & dropping off Sadie at home, we headed back down to the festival for drinks, more music and the 5K race!
The 5K went really well! It started at 8:30 pm so the sun was setting and actually at the end it was practically dark. We ran with LED lights. I ran and Mom walked, then once I was finished I went back and walked/jogged the remainder with her. We both did great!
One of the local bands I like, The Key West Band, was playing to end the night.
This event made me excited for our next big, annual festival, Steppin' Out in August!

Today, after we slept in a bit, Mom and I went to the lake for a couple of hours. I love having Claytor Lake, one of Virginia's State Parks, so close to home! It only takes about 20-30 minutes to get there.

Unfortunately after about two hours it started to drizzle and then a scary cloud rolled in, so we decided to call it a day. I'll definitely be back soon, though!

Now it's back to work/baseball time!

sunday social // sunday verse

Happy Sunday!
Tomorrow I'll update y'all on my weekend - a lot of fun! - but today I am going to link up for Sunday Social again! I thought these music questions were fun!

1. What is your all-time favorite song?
This is SO tough! I have so many favorite songs for different reasons, i.e. meaning, the tune, memory that goes with it, etc. One of my favorites is Crash Into Me by Dave Matthews Band.

2. Who is your favorite singer/band?
Right now my favorites are Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean and Mumford & Sons.
(I love allll sorts of music...favorites are country & alternative!)

3. What is your theme song/song that best describes your life?
Again, I can think of so many, but right now my theme song is Here For a Good Time by George Strait!

4. What songs put you in a good mood?
Any country music, any 90's music!

5. What is your favorite roadtrip music?
Any country music, Shania Twain's #1 hits, whatever the current "pop" songs are that I can jam/sing along to and Baby Got Back.

6. What song are you embarrassed to admit you love?
I would have saved Baby Got Back for this question, but let's be honest...I am not embarrassed that I know every word to that. However, I'm embarrassed to admit that every time Give Your Heart a Break by Demi Lovato comes on Pandora, I jam outttttttt. Don't judge.

Lastly, a Sunday Verse.
I love this one.
1 Peter 3:3-4

Off to the lake today!

summer solstice festival

Today in Blacksburg is the 5th Annual Summer Solstice Festival.

Last night they kicked off the festival with a miniature carnival set up right in downtown!
It was so cute and fun. Seemed to be geared toward a younger crowd (more rides for ages 10 and under) but there was a ride that was for the older crowd - or daring kids - but there was no way I was going on it! I was told it was used as a flight simulator? Anyway, you're in a rocket looking thing and it goes around and backwards and the rocket twists so you aren't ever completely upside down.
It still seems scary to me! I'm not a rollercoaster/heights type of person, if you couldn't tell. My little brother went on it, though, so I got to live adventurously through him!

Of course, going to the carnival isn't complete without getting some otherwise unhealthy food. I had to decide between a funnel cake and deep fried Oreos (you aren't living until you've tried those...)
Anyway, it was a tough call, but I went with the funnel cake!
It was a wonderful decision! I shared it with my Mom and brother. Yummmm!

After that, Mom and I headed down to The Cellar (one of my favorite places in Blacksburg, fyi) for some pizza and drinks. It was such a nice night to sit outside and we scored one of the best seats!

Today, the rest of the festival is in action! There is live music, vendors, a beer garden, a dog parade, a sand castle contest, crafts, wing eating contest, and a 5K race at 8 pm!

I'm crossing my fingers for no rain! Last year (and yesterday) it poured for about twenty minutes. Typical summer weather...sunny, hot, humid, thunderstorm, back to humid!

I hope everyone has some fun weekend plans lined up!
If not, you can head to Blacksburg ;)
